7th Central Pay Commission introduced a simplified and transparent pay structure through Pay Matrix Table. Among the mid-tier levels, Pay Matrix Levels 6, 7, 8 and 9 are some of the most commonly held positions across central government departments. These levels correspond to Grade Pay 4200, 4600, 4800 and 5400 respectively under old 6th CPC structure.

Pay Band: 2 

Equivalent 6th CPC Pay band 2: 9300-34800

Yearly Increment: ~3% of Basic pay

Current Allowance rates used:

  • Dearness Allowance: 55% of Basic pay
  • HRA: 27% for X cities, ₹18% for Y and 9% for class Z areas
  • Transport Allowance Rules: ₹3600 + DA for X cities, ₹1800 + DA for Y/Z for Level 6 to 8 and ₹7200 + DA for X cities, ₹13600 + DA for Y/Z for Level 9. DA on TA is calculated at 55% of TA.
The percentage of allowances is calculated on basic pay.

  • Total Salary: ₹35400 + 19470 + 9558 + 5580 = ₹70008
  • NPS (10% of Basic + DA): ₹5487
  • In-hand Salary: ₹69908-5487 = ₹64521

Y Class City:
  • Basic Pay: ₹35400
  • Dearness Allowance (DA) @55%: ₹19470, HRA @18%: ₹6372,  Transport Allowance (TA)+DA on TA: ₹1800 + ₹990 = ₹2790
  • Total Salary: ₹35400 + ₹19470 + ₹6372 + ₹2790 = ₹64032
  • Deductions - NPS: ₹5487

Level 9 under 7th CPC Pay Matrix corresponds to 6th CPC 9300-34800 Grade Pay 5400 (PB-2). The starting basic pay is ₹53100 and maximum given on 40th increment is ₹167800. This level represents senior supervisory posts in many central government departments.
