What is 7th CPC Pay Matrix?

The 7th Pay Matrix  of Central Govt jobs is a single table that displays all pay levels along with corresponding basic pay with increments. All previous pay band and grade pay have been structured into it, where each Level (1 to 18) represents a specific job hierarchy, and each Index within a level represents years of service or promotions.

For example:

  • Level 1 (Entry level): Basic Pay starts at ₹18000

  • Level 6 (Graduate level posts): Starts at ₹35400

  • Level 10 (Gazetted Officers): Starts at ₹56100

  • Level 18 (Cabinet Secretary): Fixed Pay ₹250000.



Formula to Calculate Salary under 7th CPC

Total salary is calculated using following formula:

Total Salary = Basic Pay + DA + HRA + Other Allowances as applicable

7th CPC Salary Components:

  • Basic Pay: Based on the level and index in Pay Matrix of a Central Organization Govt Job post.

  • Dearness Allowance (DA): Compensates for inflation. It is currently 53% of Basic Pay (as of January 2025).

  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): Varies by city category:

    • Class X (Metro): 27% of Basic Pay

    • Class Y (Tier 2 cities): 18%

    • Class Z (Others): 9%

  • Transport Allowance (TA): Paid according to city class and pay level.

  • Other Allowances: Special Duty Allowance, Children Education Allowance, CCA, etc., depending on job profile.

Example Salary Calculation – Level 6, Class Y City

Suppose an employee is at Level 6, Index 1 with a Basic Pay of ₹35400, living in a Class Y city:

  • Basic Pay: ₹35400

  • DA (53%): ₹18762

  • HRA (18%): ₹6372

  • Total Salary: ₹35400 + ₹18762 + ₹6372 = ₹60534
    (Note: Transport and other allowances not included)
